Town of Kupiskis

Kupiškis is a small northeastern Lithuanian town situ¬ated between the rivers of Kupa and Levuo. Archaeological findings of the area suggest that the origins of the first settlements go back to the 8th-7th millennia BC, after the melting of the last gla¬ciers. The first settlers were small groups of anglers, plant pickers and hunters roaming from southern Lithuanian regions. As a settlement, Kupiskis was first documented in 1480.
In 1561 -1565 Kupiskis was the centre of the administrative area, valscius and belonged to the district or pavietas of Upyte and later to that of Ukmerge. The driving of the railway of Daugpilis-Siauliai-Liepoja in 1873 animated the trade, crafts and improved communication with bigger towns. The present Kupiskis has proved to be a cozy and nice regional centre, cherishing traditions of the past and offering a pleasurable setting to both town dwellers and visitors.
