Mound in Kereliai

Near the river Kupa, in the village of Kereliai there is a unique mound in Kupiskis region, which had been thoroughly explored. From early culturical layer of the mound the scientists established that people on the mound started dwelling in the first Millenium BC. In the 6th century a wide fire started up and destroyed the settlement.

Museum of Academician Juozas Matulis

Museum of Lithuanian academic, professor of chemistry Juozas Matulis, is established in Naiviai in cultural centre. In this museum we can get acquainted with the famous resident of Kupiskis, his life and scientific work.

Memorial stone for Academicians Juozas Matulis, Pranas Mazylis and Antanas Purenas

The village of Tatkoniai is a native land for three Lithuanian academicians: chemist Juozas Matulis (1899-1993), doctor Pranas Mazylis (1885-1966) and Antanas Purenas (1881-1962). The Memorial stone was unveiled in 2000, near the burial-grounds of Jatkoniai village.

 

Monument of Temperance

The monument erected at the crossroad in the village of Oailiūnai near Skapiškis in 1862. As a promise to quit drinking, it was built by the dvvellers of Skapiškis on the encouragement of the bishop Motiejus Valančius. The monu¬ment is a tall trihedral ashler and brick chapel with a Ba-roque roof and cross and bot-toms of botties built in under the cornice around the church.

Belfry

In the square of Skapiskis town there stands belfry built under the concern of Motiejus Klimavicius in 1841. This Belfry had 5 magnificent, extremely finely sounding bells. During the years of WW II the Belfry was smashed-down and the bells were taken away. The sightseeing of the town was rebuilt in 1989 and one symbolic bell in the place of the former 5 ones was hung.

A Memorial to Mommemorate the First Catholic Mission

Near St. Hiacintas church in Skapiskis there is a memorial built in 1787, which was restored in 1990.

St. Haciatas (Jackus) church in Skapiskis

Skapiskis St. Hiacintas (Jackus) church has elements of Classicism and was first started to be built in 1819 with the money from Jacobins and under the care of Prior Gerardas Klimavicius. In 1858 Bishop Motiejus Valancius consecrated it in the name of St. Hiacintas.

Svedukalnis

Svedukalnis is situated in the flatlands of Totoriai village, near the lake Mituva and it is a small hill. The inscription on the memorial stone near the graveyard of the village notes that „220 warriors from Finnish Shooting Battalion, victims of fever epidemic, rest here, who in 1855 gave their souls to god.”
Bodies of Finnish warriors were buried by the local people in a long ditch near the graveyard of Totoriai village. In 1930 Finns built a granite memorial. In 1973 it was stolen and in 1992 a new one was erected (Author Z. Simonaitis).

Marsh of Notigalė

The upland bog of Notigalė (1095 ha) in the forest of Skapagiris, east of the Skapiškis town, was declared a svvamp reserve in 1997. Outof 12 lakęs in the marsh one of the most beautiful and frequently vis-ited is that of Notigalė (92,9 ha). Its soft wa-ter, sandy bottom and the surrounding forests lure a great number of visitors on hot summer and early auturnn days.
On a track tour around the marsh, trenches of the 1944-1945 partisan troop under the leadership of Petras Vaidukevičius can be visited.

Museum in Laukmiskiai village

Near the Kupiskis lagoon in Laukmiskiai village which keeps the traditions of the past, in the house of the writer Petras Babickas and his sister actress Une Babickaite parents' home you can find a museum opened in 2002. Visitors can get to know the 19-20 century interior of Lithuania household and history of the Babickai family.
