KUPIŠKIS DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY

Subačiaus village administration unit

On the 18th kilometer away from Kupiškis the road leading to Panevėžys reaches Subačius settlement. The settlement was established on lands once owned by farmers from Dvariškiai village after Daugpilis-Šiauliai railway station was constructed in 1873. In the beginning of XX century Subačius settlement took over the privileges of a small rural district from the Old Subačius town.
In 1959, the New Subačius, which as a habit is still called 'railway station', was given a status of town.
In 1582, the Old Subačius town located now 4 km Southwards from the railway was mentioned for the first time in written chronicles – ”Chronicles of Lithuania and Poland” by M.Strijkovskis. For the period of more than 20 years between the wars, theaters in cities of Lithuania and Western Europe were charmed by the voice of V.Jonuškaitė, an opera singer who came from Subačius town. For her beautiful voice the singer was called ”Vince the Divine”. In 1997, at the celebra¬tion of 200 years anniversary Subačius Primary School was named after VJonuskaite.
Famous linguist P.Skardžius was formed by the rich in words and figurative local dialect of Subačius. P.Skardžius was the author of the deep thought saying: ”Live language – live nation”. Professor P.Skardžius died in the USA and was buried there. The house where P.Skardžius was born is still standing in Subačius town and is marked with a memorial plate.
An extraordinary piano player B.Nasvytytė was also born in Subačius town. It was her fate that she became a daughter-in-law of A.Smetona, the President of Lithuania.
The New Subačius is the center of the administration unit. Asiūklynės Street is famous for a relic of the Šulcai family – a chapel constructed in 1889. V.Šulcas, now living in Australia, has published a book titled ”To the Past Through the Foot-Bridge Over Neminga”, which discloses the history of his family.
A.Vanagas, born in Buivenai village, finished Subačius Secondary School and followed the steps of linguist P.Skardžius. This scientist was known for his works about names of Lithuanian rivers, lakes, places and origins of family names, all compiled in books of large volumes. He was the youngest among academicians coming from Kupiškis Country.
There is an old oak tree of two meters in diameter growing in Terpeikiai village. This tree is considered as a monument of Nature. A Lithuanian discus thrower V.Alekna, the champion of Sidney Olympic Games 2000, has spent his childhood here and grew up as if taking after this mighty tree.
The landscape of this administration unit is ornamented by beautiful farmsteads buried in shady trees, by Lėvuo and Viešinta river banks and by a hundred-year-old birch alley extending from Paulianka estate up to Stirniskis mound.
