KUPIŠKIS DISTRICT MUNICIPALITY

Šimonys village administration unit

Šimonys administration center is settled next to the old Šimonys forest that has even 16 small lakes and is carved with creeks. The forest is rich with wild animals, birds, mushrooms and berries.
The forest can remember participants of 1863 rebellion against the Czar's rule. They used to produce guns there. The forest is still starting with horror of the World War II and the post-war period gunshots.
In 1561 Šimonys name was mentioned in written chronicles for the first time. The place became famous in 1700 by a painting of Saint Mary, which was said to be miraculous, in the newly consecrated church. The church was burned down during the wartime. In 1920 the church was reconstructed and known for theatrical Easter service and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin church festival.
In 1910, the Finnish scientist A.R.Niemis studied the Lithuanian language and collected Kupiškis country folklore while living in Šimonys.
Many distinct people were raised in sandy, but picturesque environs of Šimonys.
Migonys village celebrated its 400 years anniver¬sary in 1924. Lithuanian architecture classic LStuokos-Gucevičius, who designed Vilnius Cathedral and the City Hall, Rokiškis estate palace and commercial buildings, was born in Migionys village. The architect's life and creations have inspired poet Justinas Marcinkevičius to write the drama of songs ,,The Cathedral".
K.Šimonis, a distinctive representative of the symbolic-romantic art, was born in Starkoniai village. Though K.Šimonis spent his childhood in the surroundings of the Middle Lithuania nature, it seems that his paintings reveals the murmur of Šimonys forest as well.
Adomynė village is settled at the outskirts of the administration unit, where one of the two Lithuanian rivers with two different names flows. It is called Šetekšna river in Rokiškis and Kupiškis areas, and Jara river – in Anykščiai area. In the end of XIX century the village was called Jonava, and in the beginning of XX century it became Adomynė. These names were derived from personal names of people that owned the estates and on the land of which the village was settled. Cultural and Health Care Institutions were moved to the recently renovated estate palace that is considered as one of the most interesting monuments of the old wooden architecture in Lithuania.
Serpent like high road from Adomynė village to Juodpėnai village leads through Kepurinė forest, a wetland reservation. Basing on archaeological findings, Juodpėnai village was inhabited in XIV century already. In 1997, a chapel was constructed in Juodpėnai village. This settlement of farmers was established in the second part of XX century and had no church.
