Noriūnai village administration unit
A hundred-year-old tree conceals Noriūnai estate. Currently this is an administration center located next to Kupiškis-Panevėžys High-road. The park that descends towards the valley on the left bank of Lėvuo river has got fir-trees, European larch-trees and gray walnut-trees growing there. Ripple of a small Kriokšlys creek can be heard there as well.
Since 1665, when Noriūnai name was mentioned for the first time in historical records, the estate had been passed on from hands to hands among Lithuanian noble people families, namely the Tiškevičiai, the Tyzenhauzai, the Oginskiai and the Komarai families. In XVII-XV1II centuries the estate was known as a breading-ground of Lowlander (”Žemaitukai” – Lith.) horse bread.
In the end of XIX century local masters rebuilt the estate of bricks.
In 1921, marriage celebration of Pranciška Ieva, sister of J.Adomonis, who was the last owner of the estate, and poet K.Binkis was held there.
Noriūnai architectural ensemble consisting of the estate mansion, farm laborers' building, household buildings and the park, is considered as monument of the State importance. In the second part of XX century a settlement of land reclamation specialists was established next to Noriūnai estate. The largest Principal School in the district was constructed at the very edge of the new settlement. The school was named after Jonas Černius, Lithuanian General in the period between the wars.
On the other side of Lėvuo River there is a refined tower of Palėvenė Monastery church turning towards the sky. The future famous architect L.Stuoka-Gucevičius had attended the school founded by monks Dominicians there. After the revolt of 1863, the Czar ordered to close the Monastery and the church was left open for attendees. The church is perhaps the only one sample of the late baroque architecture preserved in the Highlands. U.Babickaitė, an actress, was buried in the village cemetery and her grave is marked with a beautiful tombstone.
Buivėnai village that is close to Palevenė place has got an oak-tree, which is called a monument of Nature. This giant tree is of 24 meters high and 2.2 meters in diameter. It is considered that the tree is more than 700 years old.
