Kupiškis District and Kupiškis Country are considered as synonyms.
This part of Aukštaitija (the Highlands), which according to archaeological findings was inhabited in IV-II thousand years B. C. already, is famous by the relief so characteristic to it, as well as by monuments of nature and history, distinctly original folklore, interesting customs and the dialect inherited from Baits tribe called "Sėliai" and maintained up to the modern days.
Kupiškis Country raised a large group of intellectuals that had made a great contribution to the Lithuanian State restoration in the beginning of XX century and its rebirth in the end of XX century.
The regained Lithuanian Independence has introduced changes to Kupiškis landscape, economics and culture, as well as to material and spiritual life of the people.
The District belongs to Panevėžys Region, which is crossed by "Via Baltica" Highway.
